Ukraine ALT-10 30th Alliance Anniversary camp Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyy 29.07.-11.08.2012 RENO 12vols
PROJECT PARTNER: Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyy Centre for Social Services for Youth.
PROJECT: The camp is situated in the suburban part of Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyy. This town has rich history and a lot of places to see. It is situated on the banks of one of the most beautiful rivers in Ukraine - the Dnieper, 100 km to the south-east of Kyiv – the capital of Ukraine. Pereyaslav-Khmelnystskyy is one of the most important places in Ukrainian history. Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyy has existed since the 10th century. It was a border stronghold of the Kievan Rus state and was overrun by Tatars in 1239. The town began to recover in the 16th century and emerged as a site of Ukrainian Cossack culture. In 1654, Bohdan Khmelnytskyy and his Cossacks met at Pereyaslav to agree that Ukraine, for protection against Poland, becomes a protectorate of Russia – breakdown in the Ukrainian history.
There are 17 museums and 7 magnificent parks in the city, so volunteers will enjoy this place.
Well-known in Ukraine - Open-air Museum of Folk Architecture is situated in Pereyaslav. Here you can see, among other things, authentic peasant huts of the times of old, smithies and several windmills of the eighteenth century. In fact, a village of the 17th–19th centuries is recreated, complete with gardens and flowers around the houses with whitewashed walls and thatch roofs. In the houses you find icons and decorative towels — exactly the way it looked in the times of old. On the territory of the open-air museum, you can find other museums, one of which exhibits stone idols of the Scythian times of centuries before Christus.

L’viv is a very beautiful and cosy European city with unique architecture and lots of nice restaurants and cafés. It is famous for its ancient cathedrals, churches, museums, art galleries, theatres. L’viv was founded in the mid-13th century. The city was located on the crossroads of trade routes that made it the centre of trade and commerce and led to its rapid economic development. The medieval urban topography has been preserved virtually intact (in particular, there is evidence of the different ethnic communities who lived there), along with many fine Baroque and later buildings. The territory of central part of L’viv – 120 ha of the property at its centre now listed as a part of the World Heritage, was designated as a National Historical and Architectural Reserve.
Stryiski Park was founded in 1879 and in summer 2009 it celebrated its 130th Birthday. This giant territory (54 ha) was a favourite place of locals for years. Cinema, galleries, restaurants were situated here. Unfortunately, the last years were not so successful for the Park – because of bad financing now it is in poor condition. During this summer some renovation works in the park are planned by local authorities.
WORK: The volunteers will work on the territory of Stryiski Park and possibly in some other parks located in the central part of the city. Volunteers will clean footpaths and runoff ditches on the sides of the paths, perform landscaping and other activities for improving the park grounds. As one of the main objectives of the project is to raise awareness of the local community on the issues related to the World Heritage and to promote non-formal education methods in education about World Heritage, volunteers will be actively involved in preparing and running the following activities:
-press-conference;
- World Heritage exhibition, prepared exclusively from the materials brought by the volunteers! – open for the citizens, were posters, photos, information and other materials brought by the volunteers about World Heritage sites and other unique places of their home countries will be exhibited;
- Workshop with children about World Heritage with the use of the educational materials provided by World Heritage Centre.

Ukraine ALT-12 Youth Centre 04.08.-19.08.2012 RENO 9vols
PROJECT PARTNERS: Peace Corps Volunteers, NGO “Djerelo”.
PROJECT: Ukraine is occupying one of the leading places in Europe in the spread of HIV. The most critical situation is in the eastern regions of Ukraine and on the south. Lugansk region (the most eastern region of Ukraine) due to its specificity is a leader in Ukraine in this sphere. Lugansk region is a huge industrial area which has all problems typical for such zones: pollution, poor ecological situation, limited opportunities for local people. Local youth have just few ways of spending their free time. Together with local activists, NGO Djerelo and Peace Corp Volunteers whose project is based in Rubizhne we decided to help to create space for meetings, clubs etc. for local youth and children. Djerelo is an NGO that offers services for people living with HIV/AIDS and provides social rehabilitation for at-risk members of the community. The organization serves the town of Rubizhne as well as several neighbouring villages. Djerelo has recently expanded its services to include preventative initiatives to combat the spread of HIV and to promote healthy lifestyles. This includes the formation of after-school clubs, summer camps for local children, and trainings for students on the risks and behaviours involved in the spread of HIV infection. Djerelo also partners with other community members currently serving at-risk youth.
In order to effectively serve this population, Djerelo is in need of an indoor space, separate from the office, which can be used as a place to host trainings, hold youth clubs, allow sports clubs to remain active during the winter months, and provide educational resources on healthy lifestyles and HIV/AIDS infection and prevention.
The proposed project is to renovate the second floor of Djerelo’s building to create a Youth Centre, dedicated to supporting the organization’s preventative services and youth activities year round. The Youth Centre would also be used by community partners who serve at-risk youth. International Youth Volunteers would work with Djerelo staff, Peace Corps Volunteers, community volunteers, and youth volunteers to complete the project.
Ultimately, the project is aimed at both completing the Youth Centre, as well as transferring technical and leadership skills to local youth volunteers. We plan to have study part – international volunteers will have an opportunity to learn more about HIV infection, situation with HIV/AIDS in Ukraine and also share information about situation in their native countries. Also we plan meetings with local youth and schoolchildren. The project is really important for the local community and for volunteers who want to help and to see results of their work.
WORK: the task for the Workcamp is to renovate one or two rooms on the second floor of Djerelo’s building to create a Youth Centre. Renovating process includes the following tasks:
- preparing surfaces for painting;
- painting of walls and windows;
- laying the flooring;
- clean up
- In case international volunteers have a wish and skills to paint the walls in a creative way (pictures, symbols, stories etc.) it is possible to organise.
ACCOMMODATION/FOOD: volunteers will be housed in smaller groups with 2 local Peace Corps Volunteers and host families. Each Peace Corps Volunteer can host 4 volunteers, and local families can host 2-3 volunteers. Volunteers will have the opportunity to spend time together as well as prepare meals as a group. Food will be provided three times per day.
LOCATION: town Rubizhne, Lugansk region, Ukraine
TERMINAL: Lugansk
NEAREST AIRPORT: Kiev Borispil Airport (KBP).
LEISURE TIME: Ukraine is a wonderful place to visit during the summer. Volunteers will be given the opportunity to swim at the local lake, barbeque in the forest, enjoy outdoor sports. There is a possibility to spend weekend in children summer camp in 15 km from city Rubizhne.

The group consists of 8 international and 20 national volunteers.
PROJECT: Lviv region is rich with historical, cultural and nature monuments of national and international significance. But tourist routes in countryside are still not well developed. Changing locations they make their input in historical and cultural heritage protection. This year we decide to involve international volunteers in such a camp, what we suppose will be very successful and interesting for both Ukrainian and international volunteers.
